10 Things That Date Friends Terribly

4. The Clothes

Where to start? With perhaps the exception of hairstyles and actually using grainy black and white cameras, nothing gives away how old something is quite like what people are wearing while they're doing it. Friends neatly straddled a seemingly endless chain of fashion trends while it was on TV - one of the most watched shows in the world somehow managing to echo and nudge trends without ever quite starting or becoming a slave to them.

The first few seasons of the show saw Rachel develop as something of a style icon. Her preppy, timeless and incredibly flattering girl-next-door look during her Central Perk days (the denim, the knee socks, the plaid) even culminated with her signature highlighted and layered haircut getting called "The Rachel".

The rest of the cast weren't so lucky though; Phoebe's Boho-Chic patchwork look is best left in 20th century incense shops, Chandler's baggy wool waistcoat/cardigan thing remains a crime against humanity, and Joey's skin-tight knitwear thing in later episodes still boggles the mind. We'll never know who to blame for starting the leather pants trend of the late '90s either, but you can certainly thank Ross Geller for ending it.
