10 Things That Happen When You Date A Doctor Who Fan

6. Your Date Posts Pictures Of Tally Marks On His/Her Body

Tumblr Mg8t4dqatx1qzzh7so1 500 Gif This might seem a strange thing that happens when you're in a relationship with a Whovian, but at least it only happens for one day a year. Specifically, it happens on the Saturday closest to the anniversary of the original broadcast of the Series 6 story, Day of the Moon. Sometime around 30th April, social media sites explode with pictures of people with tally marks scrawled on their arms, legs, faces, stomachs, and... um, more private areas. There are also lots of pictures of the Silents, followed by endless comments along the lines of "I don't understand why you posted a blank picture". Because when dozens of people make the same joke in a thread, that's comedy gold, right there. Assuming there are members of the not-we tribe reading this article ("not-we" comes from the story Kinda, by the way), an explanation for this seemingly bizarre behaviour is in order. In The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon, the Eleventh Doctor and his friends fought a race of aliens with a peculiar ability. The instant someone looks away from the creatures, they forget the aliens exist. To get around this neat little ability, the Doctor and chums came up with a system of making tally marks in obvious spots on their bodies whenever they saw one of these "Silents". The marks were reminders that they had encountered an alien even after they'd lost the memory of the event. Look, the taking selfies of body parts with black marker pen marks is honestly just a once-a-year tradition, OK? That's not too terrible, right?
