10 Things That Need To Happen If Torchwood Comes Back
2. Monster Of The Week
When was the last time you saw a blowfish driving a sports car? Exactly. It's been far too long. Torchwood's last two offerings have each been focused on one overriding story so it's easy to forget that the series initially adopted the winning 'monster of the week' mantra for which its parent show is acclaimed. For the most part, it was pretty damn good, too. The first half of Series 1 was pretty shaky, of course (as first halves of new shows often are), but it didn't take long for Torchwood to find its feet. In fact, by the end of its first 13 week run it had achieved more than most shows manage in multiple seasons and its new legion of fans were left wanting more from the show which was no longer "that Doctor Who spin off with sex and swearing" but a fully fledged series in its own right. The "sex and swearing" held true, but that goes without saying. This format also gave writers the chance to dedicate an episode to each of the main characters whilst laying all the subtle clues and groundwork to contribute towards the 'bigger picture'. That's why, especially if a new series would introduce us to a new team, it would be particularly beneficial to reinstate the 'monster of the week' to allow the show to develop its new ensemble and pitt them up against an array of foes which serve to highlight and showcase their personal skills and flaws. If the show was determined to build upon its new single stories though, there is a way they could get away with it...
