10 Things The Arrowverse Wishes It Could've Done Differently
7. Inconsistency (Supergirl)
Inconsistency isn't unique to Supergirl - it features across the Arrowverse. Arrow's first two seasons are far superior to the rest; The Flash needlessly includes 'funny' filler episodes that draw away from the main arc. However, Supergirl doesn't seem to fully understand its characters.
One of the earliest examples of this in the show is Kara's relationship with James Olsen which seems at odds with the show's message of female empowerment. That's not to say an empowered woman can't be in a relationship at all, but the show forces the two characters together and it adds nothing to the plot. Apparently, Melissa Benoist and Mehcad Brooks just didn't have the right chemistry and the storyline was abandoned. It did nothing for either character in the first place and just seemed like having a core relationship from the get-go was a network requirement.
Maggie Sawyer and Alex Danvers' break-up is another example. Yes, Floriana Lima wanted to leave the show but the break-up could've been handled better. Supergirl's writers decided that Alex wanted children and Maggie didn't - something that Alex had never mentioned before. That doesn't mean she hadn't privately thought about it, but in a TV show, you need to at least hint these things to an audience - otherwise it all feels out of the blue.
Supergirl is a good, entertaining show but it needs to start to understand its characters better. If the show is sending us mixed signals about what a character wants, how are we supposed to try and attempt to understand their actions and decisions?
