10 Things The Arrowverse Wishes It Could've Done Differently
6. Questionable Humour (The Flash)
Every Arrowverse show uses humour - some more than others - but it's The Flash that takes the title for being the most light-hearted Arrowverse show. The unique tone of the show is perhaps what makes it so popular. Despite this, sometimes the humour is taken a step too far and it ends up undermining any tension or urgency The Flash is trying to create.
Ralph Dibny seems to encapsulate this. It is near impossible to have a serious scene with Dibny in it because the writers are so focused on making him a constant joker. Whether he's expanding or shrinking, you can count on the so-called Elongated Man to bring the humour.
The problem is, the stakes are set pretty low in The Flash. The show doesn't often put its core characters in any serious peril. When it does, it's characters like Dibny that undermine the tone of the scene. Actor, Hartley Sawyer, actually does a great job with what he's given. What would be even better is if the writer's gave his character more of a purpose. Cisco is a funny character but it isn't his only personality trait.
This problem isn't limited to Dibny though. The Flash's issues with humour can be seen on a much larger scale. The show has a habit of including often absurd 'filler' episodes that draw away from the main arc in favour of humour. Hopefully, this is something The Flash will fix going forwards. Humour is a characteristic of the show - it wouldn't be the same without it - but there is a time and place.
