10 Things The Walking Dead Wishes It Could’ve Done Differently

9. Maggie's Weird Absence

While she was never quite as well defined as her comic-book counterpart, Maggie was still one of the best characters on the show. Lauren Cohen imbued the hero with such gravitas and pathos that it was hard not to root for her (even when she's making some pretty questionable decisions), so when it was revealed that she (along with Rick) would be leaving the show in Season 9, fans wondered how the writers could ever plug the gap.

Unlike Rick though, Maggie didn't get a proper exit. Her character being written out came down to behind-the-scenes pay disputes between Cohen and AMC, with the actress moving on to star in a new TV Show, Whiskey Cavalier, when negotiations faltered. The stalemate ended with Maggie not being killed off, but her absence being kept ambiguous so she could potentially return at some point.

With that in mind, her sudden vanishing act in the story can only feel like a massive band-aid that's been applied to a behind-the-scenes disaster, not at all an elegant progression of her story.
