Let's just get this out the way quickly: "The Stranger" is Gandalf. As in definitely Gandalf. He has a mostly grey beard, a grey tunic, a fondness for halflings... it's Gandalf. When he uses his big voice, the area darkens... like Gandalf. He likes to play with fire, and has a shield of light... like Gandalf. He talks like Tolkien did, and speaks in lessons like...

It's GANDALF!

Then again... if it wasn't (which he is), then which wizard could he be? Well, there is a few to choose from; Radagast the Brown, Saruman the White... We know that The Stranger is a wizard, as the witches who believed him to be Sauron then referred to him as one of the Istar upon realising their mistake. In fact, they come to that conclusion not only quickly, but suggest he is 'the other,' meaning that they knew both the wizard and the dark Lord arrived at the same time. According to the books, they did arrive on Middle-earth about the same time, with the wizards doing so by boat. Yet in "Rings of Power" it was Sauron who did that, so perhaps we have an ol' bait and switch.

Presumably, with that definitely being Gandalf the (not quite yet) Grey, it's most likely that other wizards will appear in the season 2 story, with him and Nori heading eastwards in search of answers to his questions at the end of the first season.

David has finally gotten his act together and written a bio. The only trouble is, it's not very good...
