10 Things We Learned From The Star Trek Lower Decks Trailer

2. Influenced By Rick And Morty? Just A Bit

Star Trek Lower Decks Mike McMahon

Mike McMahon is one of the writers on Rick and Morty, as well as Solar Opposites. It is immediately apparent in both the animation style and some of the zanier elements of the trailer that these shows have influenced Lower Decks.

That, in no way, is a negative thing. Rick and Morty is one of the most popular shows in existence as of the writing of this article, something that surely helped McMahon in securing the role as showrunner here. While there are those who take issue with some of the elements of Rick and Morty, it is undeniably one of the more clever attempts to turn the genre on its head.

To be clear, this is not to say that Lower Decks should be a clone of that show. They are and should remain entirely separate. However, allowing a slight influence across would not be unwelcome. Looking at the attached image, with Ensign Boimler in the maw of a giant slug - this could be straight out of an episode of Rick and Morty.

However, this is Star Trek. One thing that the Kelvin universe films did quite well was introducing the idea that there really are strange creatures out there. Think of the giant creature that tries to eat Kirk on Delta Vega. So, a giant slug attempting to eat an officer in Lower Decks really isn't that much of a stretch!
