It's already confirmed that Gil-galad will be in the new series. Jackson originally included him in his movie adaption, but ultimately cut him out of the prologue; you do get one quick glance of him, taking down an orc with his spear, however.

It's likely he'll play a huge role in the series given his significance in the Second Age.

He led the elves in the Last Alliance and played a key role in the destruction of Sauron. It was Gil-galad along with Elendil, who fought hand to hand with the Dark Lord, wounding him so badly that Isildur was able to cut the Ring from Sauron's hand, vanquishing him for years to come.

Gil-galad's duel with the Dark Lord was not without its consequences, though. He suffered terrible injuries, essentially being burned to death by the evil of Sauron's black hand. There's a reason we didn't see him in the Jackson movies - his death is one of the most gruesome in all of Tolkien's writing!
