10 Things We’re Hoping To Get From BBC America’s The Watch

8. Vimes' Climb In Society

BBC The Watch
DoubleDay

Like his beloved Watch, when we first see Vimes he was the walking (or rather lying) definition of a failure.

Collapsed in a gutter, lamenting the cruel twists of life and too drunk to stand, our first look at Vimes was nothing special. Through an inspiring struggle to better himself, we see him grow into the founder and commander of the most competent organised police force on the Disc.

Overcoming his alcoholism was his first and perhaps most fundamental shift, a goal that many of us know is as fulfilling as it is difficult. From this initial success Vimes grows ever more bold, saving his city and the larger world on multiple occasions, stopping several wars and uncovering plots as intricate as they are baffling.

When he is finally rewarded with the recognition, home and family he has struggled so hard to achieve, we feel it with as much appreciation as any real life success story.

My passion for all things Sci Fi goes back to my earliest days, when old VHS copies of Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet gripped my tiny mind with their big, noisy vehicles and terrifying puppets. I'd like to say my taste got more refined over the years, but between the Warhammer, Space Dandy and niche Star Wars EU books, perhaps it just got broader. I've enjoyed games of all calibre since I figured out that dice weren't just for eating, and have written prose ever since I was left unsupervised with some crayons next to a white wall. I got away with it by calling it "schoolwork" for as long as I could, and university helped me keep the charade going a while longer. Since my work began to get published, it's made all those long hours repainting the walls seem worth it.
