6. Cox Was Brought Up As A Roman Catholic Just Like Daredevil... And He Is Related To A Former Promoter Of Sunday Sabbatarianism
One of the most-interesting similarities between Cox's upbringing and that of Matt Murdock's is that both were born into Roman Catholic families. Executive producer of the series, Steven S DeKnight, believes that Daredevil is "one of the most, if not the most, religious characters in the Marvel Universe" - and Murdock's Catholicism plays a key role throughout, including when he visits church in order to give a Confession. Cox was also raised as a Catholic - although he readily admits he rarely practises - and he believes this religious upbringing helped him to immerse himself in the role. He said of the role:
"You grow up steeped in that (religion). If youre in church, standing in front of the altar, you sort of automatically know how to respond. It all kicks in - you genuflect, you sit in the pew. I didnt have to pretend any of that (while acting out the scenes).
Interestingly, continuing along the religious theme, Cox's ancestor Sir Andrew Agnew, 7th Baronet, was actually such a devout Roman Catholic that he was a dedicated promoter of Sunday Sabbatarianism - meaning he would forgo recreational activities on a on Sunday in order to fully observe the tradition of the Sabbath.
