It's clear that all of the Belchers have longed for a pet for added companionship, but simply can't afford it. Bob often gives voices to things that can't talk as a way of suppressing his loneliness whilst Linda is fascinated by a group of raccoons digging through their garbage. Meanwhile, the kids have openly wished for a dog and have consistently befriended some unusual things, such as a goose or a mechanical toilet.

However, it can be interpreted that Teddy is the real family dog and none of them realise it. He's extremely loyal to Bob and needs constant feeding, but will gladly eat anything (including a sponge). He's often very excited over the most mundane things, easily impressed and thinks the world of the Belchers, spending all of his time with them - the same way a dog perceives their owners.

In return, The Belchers show Teddy lots of love and often involve him in their misadventures.
