The leading ladies from their respective segments of history, the parallels between Rhaenyra Targaryen and her descendant Daenerys are practically impossible to ignore.

Growing up as the political pawns of the men surrounding them, both women share a penchant for bravery, intelligence and revolution, as well as a preternatural connection with their dragons. While it would be reductive to present the duo as literal doppelgangers of one another, the similarities between the pair are hard to deny.

This intimate ancestral connection is highlighted by an exemplary piece of cinematography in the show's first episode. The visual of Milly Alcock's younger Rhaenyra as she enters the Throne Room to converse with Daemon is actually a mirror image from Game of Thrones' much-maligned finale. In eerily identical fashion, the shot depicts both Targaryens in the foreground as they survey the Iron Throne.

Missing this callback would be more than understandable. Most fans are still working to erase the memory of the heartbreak associated with the calamitous finale of House of the Dragon's predecessor - to the point that many wrote the show off before it even aired. As such, there's a fairly strong chance that they may have subconsciously repressed this particular recollection out of sheer - and entirely justifiable - bitterness .
