10 Times BoJack Horseman Assaulted Our Feelings

9. Times change, people change

(“Nice while it lasted” – Season 6, Episode 16)

It was inevitable that it would end like this.

From the outset Diane appears as a strong, independent female lead. As we voyage onwards though we come to realise that at times, she is just as broken or significantly damaged as the actor of whom she bases her book on. This creates an irrational but practical dynamic between these two characters, one that sees them delve into various territories together. A typical will-they/won’t-they type of story commonly found stapled into multiple sitcoms such as Friends, The Office, How I Met Your Mother etc.

Well, to give you the short answer. They won’t and they don’t.

As the series comes to an end, we’re left with a conversation between two characters who have gone through an unprecedented amount of change. Diane has settled down, fallen in love and moved away. BoJack is in prison. These two very different lifestyles portray the mediators that pulled them apart, as well the ones that brought them together in the first place.

The last scene we see from the entirety of BoJack Horseman as a show is the sentimental final image of the two coming to the realisation that their friendship (and any potential chance they had of ever being a couple) is evidently over. As we the viewers are left imitating the actions of the characters on screen as we gaze into the heavens wondering where we go from here.
