10 Times BoJack Horseman Assaulted Our Feelings
7. Todd loses it with BoJack
(“It’s you” – Season 3, Episode 10)
Todd Chavez as a character is potentially (as well as very much intentionally) the most purely innocent, kind and wholehearted personality of the entire ensemble. Which makes it seriously hard to believe that such piercing words of displeasure could come from such a sweet and innocent source. As we see with a dynamic shift in tone when Todd leaves his graceful nature behind in such a benignly powerful scene, one of which effortlessly balances momentary humour alongside an expression of rage. It all culminates in BoJack's secret about Todd’s long-time crush Emily being metaphorically “crushed” by him in the sack accidentally slipping out. It's a move that sees the show instantaneously trading humour for uncomfortableness in one fell swoop.
After mistaking BoJack's interpretation of “everything” as being a reference to, well, literally everything. Such as the time he counted to a million and the time when he was a kid and used to, “bang on his butt like a bongo drum”. BoJack, utilising his old toxic traits attempts to blame Todd for his removal on the Oscar nominations list. Reeling off all of the “nice” things that he’s done for Todd over the course of the last six years, but quite clearly forgetting about the few times he prominently stood in his counterparts’ way of happiness or success. Which is exactly where this conversation begins spiralling out of control.
Subjectively stating all of BoJack's worst behavioural traits in one impulsive snowball that implodes on a lugubrious, yet provocative note. After the main antagonist admits that he has done something widely regarded as taboo in a municipal amount of cultures, Todd proceeds to lose his s**t. Flailing his arms, raising his voice and even going as far as to vociferate obscenities!
Ranting at BoJack that despite all of the iniquities he was dealt and the self-pity he finds himself fetishising more times than not, that the answer is simple, “It’s you”.
