(“Free Churro” – Season 5, Episode 6)

BoJack Horseman is a series renowned for its abrasive, ambitious and adherently funny as well as immensely clever writing. Nowhere is this more well represented than in the titular masterpiece Free Churro.

This entire episode is a complete monologue from beginning to end without so much as a whimper from any other character. In the preceding events leading up to the episode, Beatrice (BoJack's mother) has passed on. The only person left to say anything at her funeral is her unanimously despised son, the concept alone is fascinating and opens up so many avenues. But what really encapsulates and captivates though is Will Arnett's stunning vocal performance. As we observe him battle with his conflicted emotive nature all the while cracking awkwardly sickening jokes, instantly transitioning between rage and hysteria, amid embodying the expression "death at a funeral" to its maximum potential. Leaving us to ponder whether we should laugh, cry or just feel uncomfortable.

This is until the episode abstains with an ulterior but deeply saddened man staring blankly into space as he personally comes to the understanding that “my mother is dead and everything is worse now”.
