10 Times Doctor Who Appeared Where You'd Least Expect

6. In An Advert For Smoking Products

Along with the TARDIS and the Doctor themselves, the Daleks are right up there with the show's most iconic elements, so it does make sense that certain companies might want to license them for use in their advertising materials.

But even so, the sight of a Dalek whipping out a packet of cigars, lighting one with its laser, and proceeding to smoke the damn thing definitely isn't something you'd expect to see outside of a bizarre fever dream.

And yet, here we are. This truly bonkers TV ad was created by Hamlet to market its cigars, but ultimately, it was exterminated, and it never made it to air.

Though the Daleks are obviously evil little gits, you have to question the logic behind connecting a family show with an adult product in the first place.

What next, Sontarans selling condoms?

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
