10 Times Donald Glover Stole The Show In Community
1. Saying Goodbye (Geothermal Escapism)
This one is painful for most fans of Community, something that is still hard to think about years later. Geothermal Escapism is the episode that Troy says goodbye to Greendale, to the study group and to his best friend Abed to embark on a journey with his hero LeVar Burton.
Until a potential movie, this is the last time that Glover has appeared as Troy Barnes canonically. His goodbye is crushing, the most emotional moment of the show and such a powerful display of the bond Troy made with audiences around the world. The episode itself is focused on Abed's reaction, with him going through a meltdown where he refuses to process dramatic change, engaging in another game like his pillow fight with Troy. He hopes that if the game never ends, he doesn't have to say goodbye to his best friend, that he gets to be in bunk beds with him for the rest of time.
But by the end, time runs out and he has to leave. While his goodbyes to everyone are emotional, his embrace of Abed and the connection they have is indescribable. All these experiences have lead to this one moment, where you know that their love for each other will last forever, even if life has to change. It is still the best performance of Glover’s career.
Thank you for five wonderful years, and hopefully one day, we’ll get a couple more hours with our Troy Barnes.
