10 Times Donald Glover Stole The Show In Community
8. The "Notches" (Intro To Political Science)
The underrated episode Intro to Political Science perfectly captures the unique qualities of each member of the study group, giving a particular spotlight to Glover's boyish charisma and sense of humour. The group are having one of their trademark sprawling discussions, this time about Annie's desire to run for student president. They run through their usual tropes, with Jeff's cynicism, Britta's political consciousness and Annie's idealism all being on full display.
The intro goes into another level of hysteria when a small, simple gag takes place, with Abed marking Jeff's classic "wingers" with a notch on the side of the table. A few seconds later, Jeff's abs are mentioned and while smiling, he makes a notch of his own to proudly show how often the group discusses his body. Then, in one of the most characteristic moments for Troy in the whole series, it cuts to him joyously smiling before making one of his own, under the word "notches."
It's hysterical because of how committed Donald is to selling Troy's genuine delight over this simple act. He's taking pleasure in just being part of the group, even if he has nothing in particular to mark on the table. It's such a great gag that builds off of the show's commitment to subtle, unexpected comedic payoffs, and Glover is essential to its success.
