10 Times Donald Glover Stole The Show In Community

7. Breakdown In The Experiment (Social Psychology)

The first season of Community took a little while to find its feet, slowly coming to terms with the absurdities of their protagonists. However, after a few episodes, the potential for silliness outside of their archetypes was truly realised. The defining moment which switched Troy from a cooler-than-thou jock to the most adorable sensitive boy in the universe took place in Social Psychology.

Annie is doing a class with Dr Ian Duncan where they are conducting an experiment to try and prove the "Duncan Principle" which proposes that human beings will crack under an extended period of delay. Annie invites Troy and Abed to sit in a room where they are supposed to wait in a lobby for their appointment, being told every once in a while that it'll just be a few minutes, despite the fact that they're going to be there for hours.

While Abed's mental fortitude and commitment to his friendship with Annie (thinking that the eventual experiment at the end of the wait is important to her) sees him breaking the hypothesis of the principle, Troy is not so patient. In one of the first displays of Troy's beautiful frustration, he starts screaming over the wait, falling to his knees and howling, "The Soul Train awards were tonight!", before crawling through his tears out of the frame. It is a wonderful scene and a huge sign of what was to come for Glover as a comedian.
