4. When He Made Bart The Best Hot Chocolate You've Ever Seen In Your Life
In The Simpsons Movie, Ned is again at his kindly best. He’s a man of many neat, tidy, comfortable, super-safe talents, and making hot cocoa is revealed to be another of them in one scene.
One of the only Springfield residents that doesn’t want to kill the Simpsons at this point (Homer having ultimately doomed the town to be enclosed in the doom with his silo of pig droppings), Flanders offers Bart a mug of his now-legendary hot cocoa.
Bart refuses at first, claiming that cocoa is for “wusses,” but changes his tune when he sees what a Flanders-style hot chocolate really consists of.
In a brilliant little visual gag, Ned adds cream, a wafer, more cream, chocolate shavings, a marshmallow and then lightly toasts the marshmallow, making this the most elaborate and glorious concoction Bart’s ever seen in his life. The boy gratefully scurries over to take the mug from Flanders’ windowsill, then hurries a short distance away to enjoy the drink.
It’s a touching yet hilarious scene, and just more evidence that this compassionate man deserves far better than to have an unappreciative lout like Homer as a neighbour. He'd be far too polite to say so, though, of course (most of the time).
