10 Times Star Trek Didn't Think It Through

3. Scotty Hates Women

Wolf In The Fold was written by Robert Bloch, of Psycho fame. It is an atmospheric, scary Original Series outing, one that captures the paranoia and fear of an unknown serial killer. Bloch was no stranger to creating these dark settings but he included a theme that sticks out.

Scotty had been injured in an accident caused by a woman, which causes McCoy to fear he will end up resenting all women.

In the mid-'60s, while psychological understanding of the complexities of our psyche wasn't as developed as they are now, this still feels like a reductive take. If Scotty had cause (which he didn't) to hate all women, wouldn't this immediately end his career on a starship? At least one populated by men and women?

If medical knowledge equated to - 'woman hurt you, so you think woman bad' - then what had humanity been doing in the medical field for two hundred years?

The script is scary, intense, and is still a great episode years later - but this element of the plot simply doesn't hold up to scrutiny. It felt like Bloch simply needed something to put Scotty in the crosshairs.
