10 Times Star Trek: The Next Generation Tried To Be Sexy
6. Jamaharon (“Captain’s Holiday”)
On shore leave, Captain Jean-Luc Picard insists, “All I require is to sit in the sun and read my book. Alone.”
Unfortunately, he has chosen to visit Risa, a resort planet known throughout the sector for its balmy tropical winds, glittering beaches, and highly enthusiastically, freely personable locals.
Risians are among the friskier alien races throughout Star Trek, and visitors to their planet are encouraged to indulge in the natural wonders of other guests as much as in those of the landscape. Risian valet Joval spies Picard sitting with a horga’hn, a traditional fertility symbol. She informs him, “To display it is to announce you are seeking jamaharon.”
In other words, it’s a none too subtle way of announcing to all passersby that a few minutes of heavy breathing might be nice. Picard is aghast. Supposedly. He hides the horga’hn under a towel. Hilarity ensues.
And so, yes, an entire episode of TNG was set on the Alpha Quadrant’s very own Planet Sexy Sex. It was very enlightened of the writers to dream of a time when an entire society will exist only to give visitors a nice little roll in the dunes.
