5. Superman Loses Lois, Then His Mind, Before Becoming A Dictator - Injustice Games And Comics
This gets dark very fast, so hang on.
The Injustice series commences with the aftermath of Joker poisoning Superman and convincing him that he was fighting Doomsday. He pulls Doomsday high above Earth, intending to kill him. Once in orbit, the poison leaves Superman's body and he finds that he has actually killed Lois Lane and their unborn child. On top of that, a deadman switch the Joker implanted into Lois' heart detonates a nuclear bomb in Metropolis.
Shortly after, an enraged Superman interrupts Batman's interrogation of the Joker, rams his hand into the Joker's chest, and rips out his heart.
With that, Superman decides that the only way to save Earth is to conquer it. Over the next five years, he bullies and threatens both friends and enemies to his side, creating the One Earth Regime and calling himself High Councillor. This version of Superman is ruthless, either killing or forcing others to kill heroes, villains, and civilians alike simply because they do not agree with his methods or new philosophy.
Superman turning his back on humanity in such a fashion is terrifying, because it demonstrates how one bad day for someone with his powers can change the course of the whole world
