10 Times The Doctor Wasn't Very 'Doctory'
4. Day Of The Daleks - Shooting Ogrons
“I never carry weapons”, the Fourth Doctor says in the Face of Evil. However, on several occasions that’s not exactly true. The Talons of Weng Chieng and the End of Time are both examples where the Doctor carries a weapon, for whatever reason.
But, never as carelessly as in Day of the Daleks, where the Third Doctor gets his hands on one.
When escaping pursuing Ogrons, the Third Doctor picks up a laser gun and disintegrates several of them.
Whether this makes the situation better or worse, Ogrons are ape-like humanoids of limited intelligence, nearly mindless servants of whichever race hires them. But does that make it any better that the Doctor simply picks up a weapon and takes out a bunch of them rather than some other alternative?
Since then the Doctor has very rarely used guns, and whenever he has, it hasn’t been to straight up kill anyone. The Doctor’s stance on not using guns makes for interesting narrative decisions in the show, as the Doctor simply cannot kill enemies to get out of a situation. Sadly, not the case in Day of the Daleks.
