10 Times The Simpsons Blatantly Trolled The Audience
8. Homer's Enemy
Another episode from the resident mad genius of The Simpsons writer’s room John Swartzwelder, this season seven classic follows a character, put-upon everyman Frank Grimes, as he reacts realistically to the madcap cartoon antics of American hero Homer Simpson... and dies a result.
The mounting frustrations of “Grimesy” as he watches Homer fail upwards may be seen as a satire on bureaucracy from the libertarian Swartzwelder, but the episode also manages to successfully tear apart the idea of meritocracy which underpins all of corporate America.
Pretty impressive for an instalment which is essentially, “let’s troll the audience by having someone act like a normal person in The Simpsons universe and see what happens.
