8. Trailer Tyranny
2013 will go down in history as one of Doctor Who's biggest years of all time and its accompanying 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor, was subsequently one of the most anticipated episodes in TV history itself. The BBC's decision to exclusively release its first trailer within the confines of San Diego Comic Con, then, was never going to go do well and in retrospect they should have really seen the utter anarchy that ensued coming. Suffice to say, the fact that a preview for the long awaited special was out there and the majority of us weren't able to get our hands - or eyes - on it led to one of the show's most explosive community disputes ever seen in its half a century on our screens. The trailer tyranny became a worldwide trending topic on social media sites and it was followed by a string of boycotts, campaigns, petitions to get Steven Moffat axed and such a high level of complaints that the BBC were forced to release an official statement in which they apologised (sort of) for the inconvenience but basically affirmed that there were never going to release the trailer online. Damn. The argument in their defence was that the audience present at Comic Con had paid a lot of money to be there and as such they deserved a special treat. Many fans - seriously, it was actually worrying how many jumped to this conclusion - took it as another sign that the BBC were abandoning Doctor Who's British roots in their ongoing mission to achieve worldwide domination. This wasn't true at all, as it turns out, and the trailer was eventually revealed to the masses (albeit 3 months later) and the special itself was simultaneously screened in over 90 countries which means everyone was in the same boat in the end. Can you imagine what would've happened if America got the entire episode first? Actually, that probably doesn't even bear thinking about.
