10 Times War Broke Out Within The Doctor Who Fandom

3. Missy Mayhem

If you ever want to throw a grenade into the Doctor Who community, here's the way to do it. Simply bring up the topic of a female Doctor and you'll be inundated with arguments both for and against your controversial suggestion that the titular Time Lord should regenerate into a woman. It's one of the most hotly debated issues that continues to dominate discussions (seriously - some people are really passionate about this one!) but last year fans seemingly got the next best thing - though others would disagree - when his arch nemesis, the Master, got a sex change instead. The enigmatic Missy kept popping up throughout Series 8 and when the time finally came for her to reveal her true identity in the long awaited series finale, the Doctor Who fandom just wasn't prepared for what would happen next. Even those who had already guessed who she was long before Dark Water's climactic cliffhanger were shocked when their prediction finally came to fruition. The Master was back but this time he looked like Michelle Gomez and things would never be the same again. Only, things really haven't changed all that much, have they? Yes, the Master is now a female but it's already been established that Time Lords can change their gender so it's not like the moment hasn't been prepared for. It still served as the catalyst of one of the most heated wars within the Doctor Who fandom, though, and it's one that's ongoing too. There are those who think that it's one step too far while others are happy with the development. The rest of us are just happy to be here but it looks like this topic is one that will be talked about for a long time to come. Missy will be back with a vengeance in Series 9 later this year, too, and she'll no doubt be bringing more controversy along with her. Something tells us it's only just the beginning for this one.
