Speaking of unlikely friends, April Ludgate is, outwardly, the yin to Leslie's yang. A young intern when the series begins, she is sullen, rude and uninterested in government work, placing her at perfect odds with Leslie. However, as the show develops, so does April. She never loses her dry way of interacting with the world but she grows to value Leslie's unwavering support and to see her as an inspirational figure. It is Leslie who convinces April to strive for more than she thought possible and to nudge her into a satisfying career. Their dynamic is particularly adorable when April announces she is marrying Andy after an incredibly short dating period. Leslie is initially set against the union for entirely sensible, practical reasons. But she realises she needs to trust April to make her own choices and offers her blessing and support no matter what happens. All grumpy teens need a Knope-like mentor.
