10 Tragically Romantic Doctor Who Episodes
3. The Husbands of River Song
The poor Doctor, thanks to time-travel has to say goodbye to his wife twice, once at the library and again here, when he sees her for the last time before she dies. It’s confusing.
This episode is a fun romp, as River does not recognise the Doctor with his new face. She assumes she has met all of his incarnations, and even has the wallet photos to prove it! So, Twelve is stuck running around after her, hoping she’ll catch on; whilst also watching her snog other guys and pretend to be the wife of an evil king so she can steal a diamond off him. While this might not sound romantic, the banter and chemistry between them is excellent. The scene where River realises who the Doctor is, after declaring that he wouldn’t care enough to be there in danger with her, is marvellous. That’s when the Doctor gets to say ‘hello sweetie’ for a change.
The date the Doctor takes her on, with the sparkling lights and singing towers is gorgeous, and comes with a final twist. This might be the last night the Doctor spends with River, but it will be a night that lasts twenty-four years.
