10 Tragically Romantic Doctor Who Episodes

Amy and Rory were a fantastic couple, the best probably on the show, but wow they went through some bumpy times in the TARDIS! Perhaps none more so in this episode where due to a time difference, Amy is accidentally abandoned for thirty-six years.

This episode demonstrates how genuine and strong the bond is between Rory and Amy. Rory doesn’t care that Amy is old when he sees her again, only that ‘we didn’t grow old together’, and it’s Amy’s love for him that persuades her to change her future and rewrite time. There’s a great scene where the past Amy speaks to her future self, and they talk about how a person’s personality can make them beautiful. They agree that Rory is the most beautiful person they know.

Of course, there is a caveat. Old Amy wants to go with them in the TARDIS. The Doctor lies and says yes to this, only to shut her out of the TARDIS. When Rory protests, the Doctor tells him to choose one to save. Fortunately, old Amy makes the choice, and tells Rory not to open the door. It’s a real emotional test for the couple, and a truly heart-breaking moment.
