Throughout Rick and Morty, from the very first episode, crazy stories and wacky characters with stupid names have been the show's schtick. This applied to random aliens Rick was fighting, different planets and star systems, and people from the smartest man in the universe's past.

One such character was Birdperson. 'Pers was an old ally of Rick Sanchez, who fought side by side with him on Blood Ridge and in many more battles, appearing in several episodes of the show. The most notable was the season two finale, The Wedding Squanchers. Birdperson's wedding to Tammy ultimately became a bloodbath, with the groom biting the dust.

The post-credit scene from season three's opener confirmed that Tammy and the Galactic Federation had reanimated Birdperson as Phoenixperson, but nothing was done with the character for years. There were three years between this revelation and Phoenixperson's return to be exact.

During the season four finale, as part of the show's Star Wars homage, Tammy and the Federation were hunting down Space Beth which led to Rick crossing paths with his old friend. Phoenixperson's emergence to fight Rick on board the Death Star was still a surprise, and fans couldn't have been happier.
