Ever since Eddard Stark's head was removed from his shoulders in the first season of Game of Thrones, mainstream audiences have been aware that George R. R. Martin isn't above killing anyone.

However, that doesn't mean that none of the deaths in Westeros have come as a shock, and that stretches to the first season of House of the Dragon. Depicting the early stages of the Targaryen civil war, there were always going to be casualties, and though those familiar with the source material may have known what was coming, nobody else expected Lucerys Velaryon's death.

With the war for the throne seemingly coming to a head, the young Luke was sent only as a messenger to Storm's End to strike an alliance with the Baratheons. His uncle, Aemond Targaryen wasn't expected to be there, and even though there was some bad blood and irreparable damage between the two, there was not supposed to be any lives lost on this day.

However, Vhagar, the largest dragon in the world had other ideas. While Aemond merely meant to scare his nephew, his dragon devoured him whole. This is the catalyst that will lead to the full-blown Dance of Dragons in season two and beyond, and it came as just as much a shock to Aemond and Lucerys as it did the audience.
