10 TV Characters You Never Expected To Be Killed Off
2. Dan Espinoza - Lucifer
In a TV show that boasted the literal devil, several angels, demons, God himself, and the entire concept of the afterlife, a simple human detective was one of its more complex characters. Detective Dan Espinoza started the series as a corrupt cop, but ultimately became one of the most beloved characters both by his fellow characters and the audience.
Actor Kevin Alejandro believed that with Netflix ending the show at season five, and with fans just coming to understand Dan as a character, what better to do than to rip the rug from underneath everyone and kill him?
It worked. After learning the truth about Lucifer and thinking a lot about the prospect of going to Hell, Dan was ultimately killed by Vincent Le Mec, a mercenary working for the Devil's twin brother, Michael. It was emotional, and as designed it was utterly shocking because Dan was just solidifying himself as one of the show's best and most popular characters.
When Netflix then decided to give the show a sixth series, thanks to the afterlife concept of the show, Dan was able to return in a way that neither undermined his death, nor took away from the show's integrity.
