10 TV Friendships That Wouldn't Work In Real Life
7. Emma Nelson And Manny Santos (Degrassi: The Next Generation)
Degrassi universe holds five main series, out of which The Next Generation is the longest running one, lasting fourteen seasons from 2001 to 2015. The series takes a cautionary tale approach to many teenage struggles, such as teen pregnancy, bullying, drug abuse, domestic violence, and mental disorders.
While there are countless friendships between the characters, one of the most popular is Emma Nelson and Manny Santos. Two lifelong friends who help each other face rising issues that adolescence brings and sticking by each other's side no matter what is something all of us wish to have.
There's no denying the two girls care for one another deeply but that doesn't mean there aren't some massive problems in their dynamic. One of the recurring themes is the different nature of the girls: Emma is more uptight and reserved while Manny is more willing to think outside the box and try out new things, which often causes jealousy and resentment which in turn breaks them apart.
Their most notable fights are in Season 1, when Manny joins the spirit squad and responds to Emma's unhappiness by calling her "so boring she wants to scream", and Season 3, when Manny once again calls Emma "the prude princess" and she in turn calls her "the school slut". The girls end up patching their differences but there is another glaring problem in their relationship - they go after the same guys on more than one occasion. Craig, Peter, Kenny... you name it. While they haven't been involved with Jay and Spinner at the same time, they also qualify for that list.
Some nasty fallouts are bound to happen in long years of friendship but one has to wonder if in real life two people could handle that many ups and downs for the sake of a childhood bond.
