Few TV dramas will tug on your heartstrings more than Six Feet Under. After all, at least one character dies per episode and the plot is based around a funeral home.

However, one moment that's guaranteed to leave anyone well and truly heartbroken is when Nate's wife, Lisa, inexplicably disappears, only for her body to be found washed up on a beach. What makes Lisa's fate more tragic is the fact Nate doesn't get any closure, since it's never explained what happened to her.

Based on all available evidence, the most likely explanation is that Lisa was murdered by her brother-in-law, Hoyt. When Nate confronts him, Hoyt claims he and Lisa were having an affair. Hoyt then suggests Lisa was miserable with Nate, urging her to take her life. Since Hoyt acts incredibly suspicious and lies about certain details during this conversation, it's impossible to tell how much of what he says is true.

Before Nate has a chance to get to the bottom of everything, Hoyt whips out a gun and shoots himself dead. Though it's likely Hoyt did indeed kill his sister-in-law, the truth remains unclear.
