10 TV Questions That STILL Have You Confused
7. What Became Of Ka'kwet? - Anne with an E
This coming-of-age story follows young orphan Anne, who has difficulty fitting in due to her unconventional passions and whimsical nature. After Anne continuously rights the wrongs of the town, the people slowly but surely develop a newfound respect for her.
Sadly, things don't work out when Anne befriends Native-American girl Ka'kwet. When Ka'kwet is encouraged to stay at a Christian residential school, she's maliciously bullied and beaten by the nuns due to her heritage. Upon Anne learning of this mistreatment, the high-spirited orphan is expected to swoop in and save the day, as she always does.
Instead, Anne with an E concludes with our titular heroine leaving Green Gables, with this issue unresolved. Though Ka'kwet escapes and finds her way home, this makes the situation worse, since she's recaptured along with many members of her tribe. Ka'kwet's father attempts legal action to save his daughter, but nothing comes of it.
And that's that. The poor girl is never seen again, nor do we learn what happened to her or the other natives.
In hindsight, it's odd how Ka'kwet's fate is left morbidly ambiguous, considering every other depressing subplot in the show had a happy ending.
