10 TV Show Comic Spin-Offs That Are Surprisingly Awesome

Famous for being canceled way before its time, Firefly seems like the most obvious TV show to receive a comic book treatment. That's why it may be surprising that creator Joss Whedon was initially against it being continued in comic form. Whedon believed that the story of Firefly couldn't be told in such a format without the story suffering.

For that reason, we didn't get an ongoing Firefly series until 2018. Before that, we received various short stories all relatively separate from one another.

While they may not all coalesce into one giant epic as many comic series often do, it doesn't change the fact that these comics are personal and filled with heart. The first to be released was Those Left Behind, which bridges the gap between the ending of Firefly and the movie Serenity.

More recently, Boom! Studios bought the rights to the Firefly property. Since 2018, they have been publishing a prequel comic focused on Mal and Zoe's first meeting. The series is ongoing, and with Joss Whedon as a story consultant, it fits right into the universe.
