10 TV Show Finales That Totally Divided Fanbases

7. Alf

Tony Soprano The Sopranos Finale
NBC

Although clearly not intended to be the series finale, this one caused controversy for two simple reasons. The first being that the show was forcibly cancelled in the first place, despite generating positive feedback and having regular viewers tuning in every week. Which - for anyone under the age of 21 - is what people used to do before streaming services existed.

The second, and most notorious of these, is just how harrowing of a note it actually left on. That being one of an extremely uncomfortable nature, as children - and probably the adults who were watching alongside them - watched in horror as the titular ALF was tricked and cornered by the same Alien Task Force agents that he'd spent the series outrunning. With them capturing him, presumably to perform extensive tasks in regards to understanding his biology a little better.

Wait, what!? Isn't this supposed to be a family-friendly, predominantly children centric show?

Yes. Yes, it allegedly was, and there were a lot of children that were probably traumatised as much as their parents were flabbergasted when they turned to them for answers. Knowing that their lovable little alien buddy was in a lab similar to Area 51, being poked and prodded by government officials after likely being torn apart limb by limb, if not disembowelled, amongst other things.

Leaving the series on a very sadistic and upsetting note that should've been rectified at the earliest convenience. They did eventually do this, with an awful movie adaptation entitled "Project: ALF", but with it coming a full six years after, the damage was already done.
