10 TV Shows To Fill That Game Of Thrones Shaped Void

5. Boardwalk Empire

Martin Scorsese, Mark Whalberg and Sopranos writer Terence Winter are a staggering dream combination as it is. When you add Steve Buscemi to that mix however, the result is a wealth of talent so staggering that their collaboration can only produce something truly spectacular. While the Scorsese directed pilot episode is a masterpiece, the quality doesn't dip when he hands over directorial duties, and each of Boardwalk's five seasons are somehow better than the last. The prohibition based drama features a web of varied and complex characters, ranging from irish widow Margaret Schroeder all the way to Stephen Graeme's brilliantly portrayed Al Capone. All are perfectly fleshed out by master scribe Terrence Winter, and with Mark Whalberg and Scorsese coughing up the cash - the production values are as high as any Hollywood gangster film. A gripping mobster drama based on real life prohibition characters may either sound like your dream show or something highly unappealing. Yet regardless of your opinion on the show's setting, this HBO drama has some of the highest production values in television - and one of the most interesting story lines to accompany them. Ignore this at your own loss.
