The 1990s were, like, totally awesome dude and a hell of a lot of memorable television was aired in ten of the most way rad years in living memory. Bodacious! Like any other decade, the '90s spawned a number of distinct linguistic traits that became very prominent and, as a result, were heard regularly in popular culture. One of the most prolific cases was the use of the word "totally". Frankly, looking back, it was annoying as hell, as dimwitted kids thought everything was "totally awesome" or, like, "totally gross". In some instances, entire sentences or answers to questions would just consist of the word "totally" (they were "totally totally sentences", you might say). Even when the word was used in a seemingly normal way (e.g. "I totally forgot!"), there was always more emphasis on it than you'd put on it today ("I TOTALLY forgot!"). Cringe. The term was mostly associated with, but not limited to, halfwit youngsters of around elementary and high school age and was excruciatingly used across the board on television in dramas, comedies, live action shows and animations. While it was undoubtedly an irritating quirk, you have to admit that it's a fun aspect of '90s culture to look back on and it's definitely better than the shortened version of today - "totes" - which is used by people thanks to shows like The Only Way is Essex and generally makes those with more than one brain cell want to tear their ears off and fill the resulting gaping hole with fast-setting cement.
