9. The Closet Case - Modern Family

Original Air Date: October 7, 2015 There are many people who think that Modern Family has been in decline for a good number of years now, and whilst it's hard to argue that the show is anywhere close to "in its prime" (c'mon, it's not), it still maintains an overall quality that makes it worthwhile viewing. Sadly, the season seven episode The Closet Case - which aired last year - marked what is perhaps the worst chapter in this family's ongoing saga. As a piece of television, it pretty much summed up all the problems that Modern Family is currently experiencing in a handy 22 minute slot. A far better title for the episode might have been "How To Not Make A Modern Family Episode," because... well, you get the idea: it's crap. The plot concerns Phil's attempts to help Haley convince his wife that Dylan should move in, but ends up backtracking on the idea in the process. Other sub-plots involving Manny and a girl at school and Mitch and Jay bickering about a job offer (that's right!) feel thrown in at random, giving The Closet Case the poise of a wholly shambolic and farfetched yarn. Not to mention it's all over the place thematically, you can guess the result of every plot thread, and none of it rings true. It's everything that Modern Family needs to quit being.
