10 TV Shows That REALLY Shouldn't Have Worked

5. The Great British Bake Off

The use of the word smorgasbord has never been as aptly used as to refer to the volume of cooking and baking competitions on TV. From Masterchef to Cupcake Wars, there is a cookery competition for every palate. However, with many using similar basic ingredients, shows tend to blend into the massive batter of endless cooking competitions. But like a wholemeal loaf with a kilo of yeast in it, one show rises above the rest.

In 2010, the world was introduced to The Great British Bake Off. Whilst it seemed that the last thing the world needed was another cake-centric cook off, Bake Off had a pinch of magic- something that took an innocent enough baking show and propelled it into mainstream consciousness.

Ten years later, the series has controversially changed channels, presenters and become a global phenomenon, spawning versions across the world. The shows bunting and tea towel clad combination of good honest competition, innuendo, village fete aesthetic and lovable characters has taken a run of the mill baking competition that could have lasted a series and created a global baking behemoth.

A few soggy bottoms took this dainty little baking show to the very top. A Cinderella story- if Cinderella wore a pinny and accidentally threw custard in the bin.
