10 TV Shows That Weren't Worth The Controversy

6. Velma

Star Wars Acolyte Controversy

HBO's animated Scooby-Doo spin-off series Velma immediately had its feet put to the fire for many reasons - some of them reasonable, others absolutely not.

The fact that creator Mindy Kaling reimagined Velma as South Asian and Shaggy as Black was always going to irritate the bigots, but more acceptably, there were many Scooby-Doo fans who felt that Kaling's characterisation of the beloved gang had simply strayed too far from their original conception.

The show's over-reliance on snarky, meta humour was also widely criticised, leading Velma to ultimately be panned by both critics and audiences alike. And yet, to the surprise of a great many, it ended up being renewed for a second season.

Velma may not be good, but it's also easily ignored - a botched attempt to modernise Scooby-Doo that probably shouldn't be given a moment's thought after you stop watching it.
