10 TV Shows To Watch If You Love Buffy The Vampire Slayer
2. Runaways
And you thought your parents were harsh growing up...
Set in the MCU, Runaways is an adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn's cult comic book series about 6 super-powered teens who team up to take down their diabolical, supervillain parents. Despite the immense over-saturation of the superhero genre these days, Runaways manages to stand out due to its fun premise, charismatic cast and meaningful, introspective character moments.
While the comic rarely provided any worthwhile focus for the evil parents (collectively titled The Pride), the series takes time to expand upon them greatly. It's a wise decision that leads to a host of great performances from veteran TV actors including great work from James Marsters for all of the Spike fans out there.
Runaways touches on several themes familiar to Buffy fans including magic, growing up and mastering superpowers. Unlike many other sci fi series, Runaways' MCU setting spares us the everyone's-in-shock-and-awe-that-powers-and-magic-are-real trope so common in early instalments for these types of genres. Instead, we get right into the good stuff in a world that's already met the Avengers and witnessed both alien and robot invasions.
