The Basics: Calling it a procedural is illogical and slightly offensive, if you were to describe the show to the series' title character, Dr. Temperance Brennan AKA Bones. Based on the books by Kathy Reichs, the show has a very real science-focused narrative (re: no made up gadgets) in Dr. Brennan and her team of forensics experts with an emotional core radiating from FBI Agent Seely Booth. Solving complex crimes in the Washington DC area, the brilliant team takes crime fighting to a logical, if off-kilter, level; even lampooning CSI in one episode. The Turn Up: In the last season, we found our team (particularly Booth and Bones) haunted by psychopath, Pelant. This season ratcheted up the stakes with a satisfying conclusion to the Pelant storyline. However, the show has taken a more complex look at the lives of their characters which has enriched an already "comfortable" series. Resident psychiatrist, Sweets, has had a growing point in the aftermath of Pelant's machinations in which he used Sweets' detailed files on the team members against them. The show has also upped the tension in the relationship between our main heroes, Booth and Bones, after they've finally tied the knot. In a show that regularly showcases the interpersonal relationships between characters, it is refreshing to see added complexity, and thus better story-telling and a bit more action, to those characters. My findings indicate that this is the best season yet.
