Audiences around the world were collectively punked out when How I Met Your Mother revealed that the title character had actually been dead all along.

For nine seasons, fans were trying to figure out who future Ted's wife was and how the two would find each other. When they eventually did get together, their romance lasted for less than one episode before the writing team had her killed off.

All the clues, hints, and teases counted for nothing when viewers found out that Ted's wife, Tracy, succumbed to a mystery illness years before he started telling his kids the story.

Outrage grew even further when the series ended with Ted getting back together with Robin, something that fans had already seen about a hundred times over the course of the show.

HIMYM fans wanted one thing - to meet the mother and to be happy about it. Unfortunately, whether it was to buck expectations or it was their plan all along, the show's writers decided to massively overcomplicate the show's ending.

As a result, a huge chunk of its loyal fanbase were feeling like they'd wasted years of their life investing in the love story.
