Jess is still technically the new girl in the apartment, but she's also been there for three years now. Thankfully, the jokes long since ceased to revolve around a girl in an all-male apartment and the show has sustained itself with well-drawn characters and great performances from the main cast. The title is something of a relic of its first season, when it was advertised as a vehicle for Zooey Deschanel; that slant is also apparent in the title sequence which centres on Jess and relegates the boys to the background. Deschanel's former supporting players are now part of a well-oiled ensemble cast which relies on each of their talents as much as her own, rendering the name of the show redundant.
