10 TV Shows You Were Ready To Hate
6. Avatar: The Last Airbender
It’s impossible to pass true judgement on a show that hasn’t yet shown itself to the public, but let's face it: based on the evidence, hopes for Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation aren’t looking good.
Set in a completely different universe to that of James Cameron’s blue aliens despite the title discrepancy, Avatar is set to be based on the acclaimed animated series of the same name. A show influenced by but not strictly considered anime, it follows a group of pre-teens, several of whom possess element-bending powers, as they help Avatar Aang to develop his own powers and attempt to end the war with the conquering fire nation.
This original series, and its spin off The Legend Of Korra, are beloved by children and adults alike. What is less beloved is its previous live action adaptation. Released in 2010 and directed by the one and only M. Night Shyamalan, The Last Airbender is often considered to be one of the worst films ever made, having butchered the primarily Asian-influenced mythology and cast almost entirely non-Asian actors. The spur this film left in the side of fans endures to this day, and so when it was announced that attempts were being made to convert the premise for live-action again, people were understandably alarmed.
Though hatred towards the upcoming adaptation did briefly turn to hope, thanks to the Netflix production budget, casting, and involvement of the animation’s original creators as showrunners, worries quickly surged again after it was announced the showrunners had departed the project thanks to creative differences and a negative experience with Netflix.
We still want this one to turn out well, truly, but at this point it just doesn’t seem likely.
