6. The Sinner
This murder mystery is yet another police procedure show, but one told in a refreshingly subversive manner; Jessica Biel’s weary mother snaps and murders a man in broad daylight. Now, that’s not a spoiler, it’s the first five minutes in a tale where the ‘how’ doesn’t matter, as much as the ‘why?’.
Bill Pullman’s Detective chips away at Biel’s haphazard psychology to get the bottom of this seemingly open-and-shut case, yet instead ends up cracking open a myriad of dark twists and surprises.
Pullman is solid but this is completely Biel’s show. The actress has been attempting to prove she's more than eye-candy for close to a decade now, with her persistence finally paying off since she is sensational in the role. Playing believably broken and haunted, and without an ounce of ego as she delves into pitch-black places that leave her barren.
It’s the TV equivalent of a good page-turner, and all the more impressive in that it takes a stale and predictable formula and flips it on its head. This stand-alone tale is gearing up for a second season- sans Biel but centred on Pullman - let’s hope they avoid the Broadchurch stumble.
Until then, this is ideal weekend binge-watching material.
